Battery in Car

Are you dealing with a dead car battery in Normal? Unsure how to install a car battery, but would prefer to do so on your own? Car battery installation is generally an easy process, but there are certain steps and precautions to take in order to complete the process safely. For example, having the proper tools and parts on hand is of utmost importance. Consult this guide from Sam Leman Ford for assistance, or visit our Service Center for car battery installation near Bloomington!

Car Battery Installation Preparation

As we previously mentioned, if you plan to complete your car battery installation at your Decatur home, it’s crucial that you’re prepared. Make sure you have the following equipment at the ready:

  • Wrenches
  • Battery cleaning solution
  • New battery
  • Wire brush
  • Pliers
  • Anti-corrosion spray
  • Thick rubber gloves

In addition to having the appropriate equipment to get the job done, you will need to exercise caution throughout the process. When you move the battery, for instance, you must be careful not to spill battery acid.

Car Battery Installation Steps

Follow these steps on how to install a car battery:

  1. Turn the engine off and activate the parking brake. Pop the hood and locate the battery.
  2. Using wrenches or pliers, loosen the nut connecting the black (negative) cable from the battery, and twist and pull the cable off.
  3. Follow this step again to remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
  4. Loosen and remove the battery hold-down clamp, which keeps the battery in place.
  5. Carefully remove the battery using both hands. Dropping it may cause an unsafe leak at your Champaign home.
  6. Examine the battery tray and remove any built-up corrosion using a baking soda and water solution or a battery cleaning product.
  7. Use a wire brush to clean off the battery cable connectors with the same product, as well.
  8. Place the new battery in the battery tray. Tighten the hold-down clamp to secure it.
  9. If you have anti-corrosion solution available, spray it on the positive and negative terminals of the new battery.
  10. Reattach the battery cables to their proper terminals (red first, then black).
  11. Check the connections and position of the battery.

At this point, go ahead and start your car! There shouldn’t be a problem, but if any issues arise, schedule service with Sam Leman Ford. Keep in mind also that the replacement process is very different for all-electric vehicles like the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, and questions about your battery should be directed to a member of our service team.
