How to Reset a Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

Whether your Ford is showing a tire pressure sensor fault or the TPMS light won’t turn off after inflating your tires, this guide covers both. Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a critical safety feature — don’t ignore it. Try the steps below from your home, or book a service appointment near Normal and we’ll take care of it for you.

How to Reset the Tire Pressure Light on a Ford

First, make sure all tires — including the spare if it has a sensor — are inflated to the PSI listed on your driver’s door jamb sticker. Then try these methods in order:

Method 1: Drive at Speed

After inflating your tires, drive at 50 mph or faster for at least 10 minutes. Most Ford TPMS systems will automatically recalibrate and turn off the light once sensors detect proper pressure at speed.

Method 2: Use the TPMS Reset Button

  1. Tires properly inflated, vehicle off — turn the key to the “On” position without starting the engine.
  2. Locate the TPMS reset button (typically below the steering wheel on the lower-left instrument panel — check your owner’s manual if needed).
  3. Hold the button until the TPMS light blinks three times, then release.
  4. Start the vehicle and drive about 20 minutes to allow sensors to recalibrate.

Method 3: Inflate, Deflate, and Re-Inflate

Inflate each tire 3 PSI over the recommended amount, then fully deflate each one — including the spare. Re-inflate all tires to the correct PSI, then drive to allow sensors to register.

Method 4: Disconnect the Battery

With the vehicle off, disconnect the positive battery cable, turn the key to “On,” and honk the horn for 3 seconds to discharge stored energy. Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle. Note: this will reset other vehicle settings.

What Is a Tire Pressure Sensor Fault?

A “tire pressure sensor fault” message is not the same as a low tire pressure warning. It means the TPMS system cannot communicate with one or more sensors — so your vehicle can’t reliably monitor tire pressure at all until the issue is resolved.

Common Causes

  • Dead sensor battery: TPMS sensor batteries last 7–10 years. A dead battery is the most common cause of a fault message.
  • Sensors not relearned after rotation/replacement: The TPMS tracks each sensor by position. Rotating tires without retraining triggers a fault.
  • Damaged sensor: Road damage, corrosion, or improper mounting can disable a sensor.

If the fault appeared after a tire rotation or new install, try the TPMS reset button method first. If the message persists, a sensor likely needs replacement. Schedule a service appointment at Sam Leman Ford near Decatur and our Ford-certified technicians will diagnose it quickly.

Where Is the TPMS Reset Button on a Ford?

  • Most Ford cars and SUVs (2008–2019): Lower-left instrument panel, below and to the left of the steering wheel.
  • Ford F-Series trucks: Left of the steering wheel on the lower dashboard trim.
  • 2020 and newer Fords: Many newer models moved this to the instrument cluster menu — navigate to Settings > Vehicle for the TPMS relearn option.

Ford TPMS Reset by Model

Ford F-150

Inflate tires to door-jamb spec and drive above 50 mph for 10 minutes. For 2014 and newer F-150s, you can also use the Settings menu on the instrument cluster. A sensor fault on an F-150 typically means a dead sensor battery given the truck’s heavy use environment.

Ford Explorer

For 2011–2019 Explorer models, use the TPMS reset button below the steering wheel. For 2020 and newer, use the Settings menu on the center display. After any tire rotation, the sensors must be retrained — the Explorer is one of the most common vehicles for sensor fault messages following a rotation.

Ford Fusion

Use the reset button method with the key in the “On” position. Fusion production ended in 2020, so most remaining Fusions are at or past the typical 7–10 year sensor battery lifespan — a persistent fault message usually means sensor replacement is needed.

Ford Edge

Follows the standard reset button procedure. If a fault message returns immediately after a reset, sensor replacement is the likely next step.

Ford Escape

Reset button is left of the steering wheel on the lower panel. For 2020 and newer Escape models, check Settings first. A fault message most often points to a dead sensor battery or sensor damaged during a tire change.

Ford Maverick

Inflate tires to spec and drive above 50 mph for 10 minutes — the Maverick’s system is designed to auto-reset. A fault message on a Maverick typically indicates sensor damage or a system communication issue rather than a dead battery, since the model is still relatively new.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

A steady TPMS light means a tire is low. A light that blinks for 60–90 seconds before going solid indicates a TPMS system malfunction — most often a dying sensor battery. This means the system is no longer actively monitoring your tires. Have it inspected soon.

Why Is My Tire Pressure Light Still On After Filling My Tires?

  • The system hasn’t recalibrated yet — try driving above 50 mph for 10 minutes first.
  • One tire may still be low — double-check each tire with a quality gauge.
  • The sensor needs a manual reset — use the button method above.
  • There’s a sensor fault — if the fault message appears, inflating tires alone won’t clear it.
  • Temperature drop — tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI per 10°F decrease; cold weather may require a top-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the TPMS light reset itself?

Often yes — after proper inflation and 10 minutes of highway driving. If there’s a sensor fault, it won’t self-reset and requires service.

Can I drive with a tire pressure sensor fault?

You can, but it’s not recommended. A fault means your TPMS is not actively monitoring tire pressure, eliminating a key safety warning.

Do I need to reset TPMS after rotating tires?

Yes. Ford’s TPMS tracks each sensor by position. After a rotation, the system needs to be retrained or it will trigger a fault message. Our team at Sam Leman Ford retrains the TPMS with every tire rotation.
